Embattled Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld '54 has resigned, President Bush said this afternoon. The move comes just one day after the Democrats took control of the House of Representatives in an election that is widely viewed as a popular rebuke of the Bush administration's handling of the war in Iraq.
Bush said he is nominating Robert Gates, a former CIA chief who served in his father's administration, as the new defense secretary.
