Letters to the Editor

In thinking about war, remember history

The 'Prince' editorial on the Iraq "war" obviously wasn't written by a Princeton undergraduate history major. Go back to McCosh Hall and the books, e.g. David Fromkin, "A Peace to End All Peace: The Fall of the Ottoman Empire and the Making of the Modern Middle East."

Because of the history of the region and our misunderstanding of that history for the last 80 years, this "war" is the worst possible move, and is being conducted in the worst possible way. The reasons for this go back to the period 1914-1922; Fromkin explains how and why.

Reluctantly, I quote an erstwhile member of the Harvard faculty, George Santayana: "Those who forget their history are condemned to repeat it." Charlton Price '48 Kansas City, Missouri
