Apathy is the only unacceptable attitude regarding war with Iraq

I'm writing in response to Mike Frazer's column (March 11, 2003) regarding "a selfish call for peace." I am currently spending a semester abroad at Oxford. I have to agree that in social situations, my American accent tends to be a conversation stopper at best and an instigation for anti-American rhetoric almost anywhere I go. This has certainly weighed heavily on what I had hoped would be a fun cultural experience of studying abroad.

Unlike Mr. Frazer, however, I believe that US foreign policy should not be dictated by my personal popularity. I think there are enough reasons to either support this war or denounce it other than Mr. Frazer's feelings of rejection by his peers at the Graduate College or at the local Kneipe in Berlin.

Regardless of what your personal conviction about this war may be, Mr. Frazer's reasoning is the only kind I find deplorable. It does not matter what you think should be done about Iraq — only history may tell who is right about this conflict: the "warmongers" or the "surrender monkeys" — as long as you are willing to stand up for what you believe in.

We cross a dangerous line when the basis for our opinion is ignorance, apathy or a fear of confronting our opponents. Jonathan Goldwasser '04
