Adopting a quarter system
In the Jan. 8 Princetonian article entitled "Intellectualism Investigated," I am quoted as saying that Princeton should consider a quarter system. I did not, in fact, make any such statement during my conversation with the reporter. I did say that I thought Princeton should consider lengthening its semester beyond the current twelve weeks. While I don't believe this would result in less work for students, it would allow more time for students to become more deeply imersed in a subject. I am far from thinking that students should be encouraged to have a shorter attention span than they may already have. But I also noted that there may be no constituency for such a change either among the students or faculty, except possibly among the parents who pay a good deal of the tuition bill. I also noted that former President Shapiro also supported such an idea, and pointed to it as one unfulfilled goal of his presidency. Patrick J. Deneen Assistant Professor of Politics
