Quote based on mistake in The New York Times
My column of Nov. 18 discussed a remark made recently by Karl Rove that he was more concerned about the 3,000 American dead of Sept. 11 than a possible 200,000 Iraqi dead following a U.S. invasion. This quote was printed in The New York Times and other news sources; but, subsequent to my using it in my column, The New York Times printed a correction stating that Rove had actually been concentrating his focus on Sept 11 to the exclusion of the 200,000 protesters at a recent rally against war in Iraq. In repeating the misquote, and particularly by suggesting an insensitivity to the possibility of massive Iraqi casualties in a U.S.-led conflict, the column is unfair to Rove. I apologize for this. My core argument, however — that the Bush administration is using Sept. 11 to prevent meaningful consideration of history or the consequences of an American attack — is unaffected by the Times' correction of its original report.
