Racialism perpetuates racism
If only I could be as blunt as Joe Kochan '02 was in his Nov. 15 letter. As I was reading his letter, I was alternately amused by the delicious irony of his writing in defense of charges of racism and outraged at his hypocrisy. As USG president, Kochan helps set the tone of campus dialogue. But those who play the politics of racial division must abide by the consequences. The USG report, "Focus on: Minorities," that Kochan spearheaded earlier this year seriously set back race relations on campus. While Kochan was honest to admit the report did not contain "every side" of the debate, he nonetheless tried to pass it off as "an accurate snapshot of what many people are thinking and saying regarding race at Princeton." Instead, the report was a rehash of the irresponsible rhetoric of the campus cultural elite, who seek to perpetuate the hegemony of racial (racist) consciousness. Instead of taking the only action that can quell racial tensions - to take a stand against the hegemony of racialism - Kochan chose to stoke the flames by giving a vehicle to those who are consumed by raging against "-isms." Is it any surprise that Mr. Kochan now finds himself the target of those rants? Eric Wang '02
