Students should take advantage of Middle East experts
In his Oct. 18 column, "War's first several casualties," professor John Fleming has raised serious issues on the contrast between Islam and the West. As a scholar of the origins and rise of Western Christianity, I have spent over 40 years thinking about this issue. I have travelled throughout the Middle East, from Israel to Afghanistan, and I have devoted many years to the history of this region. Unlike professor Fleming, I have concluded that this is an infinitely rich and complex civilization.
I am glad that this issue has been raised. The University is privileged to have many distinguished scholars who have dedicated their careers to studying Islam and the Middle East. I encourage concerned students to turn to them if they have questions about this culture and this region. Professor Peter Brown Philip and Beulah Rollins Professor of History
