Unocal did not give $500 million to Taliban
After a very helpful letter from Chris Karr '02 in response to my Oct. 19 editorial, I am apologizing for not fully checking my information regarding Unocal's relationship with the Taliban. I believe that Ravan Farhadi must have been referring to the United States' $500 million that was in some years supplied by the U.S. government and spread out by the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence to various Mujaheddin groups in southern Afghanistan. Although I was gravely misinformed about the specific contribution made by Unocal, I continue to believe that oil concerns and Unocal's specifically combined with Iran and Soviet containment goals have largely shaped U.S. foreign policy in the Caspian region. These U.S. policy goals have often been at odds with basic human rights concerns. I will submit a more thoroughly researched column supporting these points in the near future. Once again, I apologize for my haste but not necessarily for my conviction. Mike Long '02
