In response to a very solid and excellent presentation of the goals and makeup of the WROC, I feel the need to clarify my previous statements. When claiming that an increase in the student-worker population would fail to assist dining hall casuals, Kyle Stout is truly saying that it will not help their monetary situation, which is one of WROC's goals. Although I do not necessarily agree with that statement, my previous implication was that perhaps WROC should add improved working conditions for dining-hall casuals to its goals. The managers cannot improve the very nature of dining-hall work. However, the casuals carry a workload that includes many duties that were once carried by student workers, making their jobs much more difficult. Moreover, due to the decrease in student workers, PUDS needs a great number of casual/temp workers. My feeling is that they will be less likely to raise wages if they add a significant number of workers to their staff.
I am pleased to say that a few WROC members have understood my views and responded positively. Hopefully, things will work out, and we will be able to improve not only the quality of pay, but also working conditions for Princeton University's dining hall casual workers.
I write with utmost sincerity and respect to the WROC and its members. John Michael Guevara '01
