With the start of the Ivy League season just around the corner, the Princeton women's volleyball team played its final non-conference tune-up last night in Riverdale, N.Y., falling to Manhattan, 3-1.
The Tigers were able to eke out a 15-13 win in the match's opening game. Princeton then jumped out to a 7-1 lead in game two. Following a time out, however, the Jaspers quickly took control of the contest, capturing the final three games by scores of 15-7, 15-6 and 15-9.
By the time the game ended, Manhattan's winning streak — which now stands at seven games — was still safely intact. The Jaspers improved to 15-5 on the season, while Princeton dropped to 9-6.
The Jasper attack was led by Manhattan's three Californians — Kim Frederick, Bridgett Geddes and Marcelina Diaz. Frederick racked up 18 kills and 20 digs, while Geddes had a strong all-around game with nine kills, 10 assists, nine digs and four aces. Diaz, the Jasper setter, had two digs, 13 aces and 44 assists.
Looking ahead
The defending Ivy champion Tigers will have to bounce back quickly, because this coming weekend, they will embark on one of the toughest road trips the Ivy League has to offer. Harvard and Dartmouth will host the Tigers on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
After losing five games in a row to start the season, the Big Green went on a five-game winning streak from Sept. 16-23. Now, however, Dartmouth is caught in another slide, having dropped its last four contests.
Slipping
The Crimson also sit below .500 with a 6-7 mark, having lost three of its last four games.
Still, the Tigers will have little room for error in preperation for perhaps the most crucial game on their schedule, an Oct. 14 matchup with Brown. Between them, the Tigers and Bears have won the last six league championships.
NOTES: Senior outside Sabrina King was named to the Ivy League Honor Roll this week . . . In four games, the Tigers went 2-2 . . . Against St. Peter's, King recorded a double-double with 24 digs and 17 kills.
