Julie Shaner had not scored in an Ivy league game.
Brown's Mary Jo Markle had not been scored upon in any game.
So when the senior midfielder slammed a shot by the Brown goalkeeper, powering Princeton to a 1-0 win, it was an unusual experience for both of them.
For her game-winning goal, Shaner was named Co-Ivy Player of the Week. The win kept Princeton (10-2-0 overall, 4-0-0 Ivy league) undefeated in league play while the Bears (9-1-0, 2-1-0) suffered their first loss of the season.
This puts Princeton in prime position as it enters the final stretch of the season.
"I'm just glad we came out on top," Shaner said in a press release after the Brown victory. "I'm really happy because I hadn't scored a goal in an Ivy League game. It was a really big goal for us. We weren't intimidated by Brown and we just tried to put a lot of pressure on them."
The Tigers have an opportunity to extend their four-game Ivy winning streak on Friday, when they will meet Harvard at Lourie-Love Field.
Shaner was not the only Princeton player recognized. Field hockey's Emily Townsend was named Ivy League Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Townsend notched two goals in two games last week in wins over Brown and Duke and is second on the team in points — despite being a defender.
"It is a little funny," Townsend said. But, she added, "I don't dribble the ball and then shoot. My goals were caused by corners and the corners are caused by my offense, so as a defender it's really the offense that gives me opportunities to score.
"I was proud of our team this weekend. I think we played well."
The victory over the Bears allowed Princeton (7-3, 4-0) to remain unbeaten in the Ivy League — and avenged last year's irksome 2-1 loss to Brown.
In that game the Bears became the only Ivy League team to beat Tigers since 1993.
She has helped lead the Tigers to a No. 7 ranking.
The team will face Delaware (7-8) today at home.
