Three years had passed since junior Casey Hildreth last took the mound. Then, he was pitching for his high school team in Westfield, Mass. — now, he was the last hope for a Tiger team desperately in need of someone to fill in for a tired and injured Princeton staff.
Hildreth pitched the eighth inning of baseball's game Thursday against Monmouth, giving up one run. Then in the next half inning the junior came up to the plate with runners on first and second. Hildreth delivered, knocking home the runner from second and picking up the game-winning RBI in Princeton's 7-4 win over the Hawks.
Hildreth returned to his normal spot at catcher during the weekend, but did not stop his torrid production at the plate, picking up two RBI in the Tigers' sweep of Yale Saturday. The junior also proved his worth on defense with two assists while catching sophomore Tom Rowland's complete game masterpiece.
After the snow had cleared on Monday, Hildreth once again came out sizzling with the bat, going 4 for 6 in Princeton's split with Brown. The catcher had two home runs and five RBI on Monday as the Tigers improved to 4-4 in the Ivy League.
While Hildreth might not be needed on the mound much more this season, he has proved his worth as one of baseball's best all-around players.
