Normally, athlete of the week — like the sport of tennis — focuses on the individual. The collective effort of the women's tennis team this weekend, however, was such a team effort that to highlight one of the Tigers would misrepresent their achievement. With victories over Columbia and Cornell, the team won the Ivy League title with its first perfect league season since 1980.
Leading the team, freshman No. 1 Kavitha Krishnamurthy first clobbered Cornell and Columbia's top players and then went on to team up with sophomore Priya Bhupathi to win on the doubles side. Bhupathi also won both of her singles matches.
Senior No. 2 Amanda Hastings-Phillips and senior No. 3 Jyotsna Vasisht, joined in their doubles games by freshman Samantha Gingold and sophomore Kristi Watson, respectively, finished their regular season careers with dominating weekends as well.
For the weekend, the Tigers lost only two matches. The whole Ivy season was utterly dominated by the Tigers. Through the entire spring campaign, the team lost only 15 out of 62 matches.
With the NCAA tournament invitation in the mail, the Tigers will look to continue this domination against national competitors — and add more accolades to their historic campaign.
