Indigo Girls to play Princeton

The Indigo Girls will be the featured act in this year's spring concert, a publicist for the band said yesterday. The group may be performing on Poe Field, far closer to Fine than previous spring concerts.

USG Social Chair Carolyn Chao '01 said she and other USG members are very excited about the prospect of the band's performance. "They have a really strong following," she said. "They've been around a while and they have a lot of hits."

The Indigo Girls, who recently released an album titled "Come on Social Now," will be visiting the University as part of their spring college and festivals tour. The tour also includes stops at the University of Chicago, Eastern Kentucky University, Indiana University in Pennsylvania, Bucknell University and Cornell University.

Both Chao and USG President PJ Kim '01 said they believed the Indigo Girls would bring a unique musical style to the spring concert. "We're obviously pretty happy about it," Kim said. "It's different from some of the bands we've had in the past. I think it will be a good change."

Though the USG has not yet signed the official contract outlining the details of the performance, Kim said the agreement should be finalized within the next week. "Nothing is set in stone yet," he said.

The venue for the concert also has not yet been decided, Chao said, noting that Poe Field is the USG's preferred site.

"We thought it would be nice to have it outside in the spring time," Kim said, adding that he believed the different location would complement the change in the type of music for this year's concert.

"It's the day before Communiversity and hopefully the weather will be nice," Chao said.

Chao said the USG would not have to take many extra measures to prepare for an outdoor concert. "It's kind of the same stuff we do in Dillon," she said.

University Crime Prevention Specialist Barry Weiser said Public Safety has already begun planning for the concert and will have additional staff present.

Chao said the show's opening act has not yet been chosen.
