The Office of Information Technology partnered with Frist Campus Center as part of its color printing initiative to install a new Xerox 7500DN color printer on the Frist 300 level.
There was only one color printer available in Frist prior to this installation. The printer was located in the USG office in Frist 204 for campus groups to use.
Students will now have increased access to color printers and will be able to send documents to the color printer by using the mobile printing option or by selecting the color printer on their computers. The color printer release station works similarly to the stations for black-and-white printers.
Senior Manager of OIT Customer Services Lelia Shahbender explained the printer was placed in Frist for ease of maintenance.
“Maintaining a color printer is more complex because it requires more attention,” she said.
While students have a 2100-page print quota for black-and-white printers each academic year, students will only receive a 200-page annual quota for color printers.
“If you send a 20-page document to the printer, and only two pages are color, you will only lose two pages from your color quota, and the other 18 pages will be deducted from your black-and-white quota,” Shahbender noted.
Students have indicated various reactions to the installation of this new color printer.
“Right now to get color printing we have to go to USG or the … Fields Center office,” events chair of the African Students Association Philomina Kane ’17 said. “Now that there is a third-floor printer that will be much more convenient.”
However, Kane added she thinks the accessibility of the printer’s location will cause the ink to run out very quickly.
“I think it’s about time that color was added to our lives,” Alexandra Ballard ’16 said. “I had to bring my own personal printer here just because for art things I like to have stuff printed in color, and this will just make it less of a hassle.”
Shahbender added that any suggestions or thoughts on the new color printer should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org.
